Training for Life

Privacy Policy

Last updated: 5 July 2026

Training For Life ("we," "us," "our") is operated by Michael Byrne, a personal trainer based in Ireland. This policy explains what personal data we collect, why we collect it, and how it's handled, in line with the EU General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR). Michael Byrne is the data controller for the information described here.

1. Who we are

Training For Life, founded by Michael Byrne. For any question about this policy or your data, contact michael@trainingforlife.ie.

2. What data we collect

Depending on how you interact with us, we may collect:

  • Account information: first name, last name, email address, and a securely hashed password, when you register for the app.
  • Contact details: phone number and date of birth, where you choose to provide them.
  • Lead information: first name, email address, and phone number (if provided) when you submit an enquiry through a Facebook or Instagram lead form, before you've created a full account.
  • Health and fitness data: answers to our health questionnaire (PAR-Q), any injuries or medical conditions you tell us about, body measurements, and progress photos you choose to upload. This is treated as special category data (see section 4).
  • Training data: workouts completed, exercises logged, sets, reps and weights, progress over time, and activity data synced from Strava if you connect it.
  • Nutrition data (optional): if you use nutrition tracking, the food and calorie information you choose to log.
  • Payment information: your subscription status and billing records. Card details are processed directly by Stripe and are never stored on our systems.
  • Messages: any messages you send us through the in-app messaging feature.
  • Marketing preferences: whether you've opted in to receive training tips and updates by email.

3. Why we collect it

  • To create and manage your account
  • To provide the core functionality of the app (workout tracking, programme delivery, progress tracking)
  • To tailor training safely to your health, injuries and ability
  • To take payment for subscriptions and session bundles
  • To respond to enquiries made through our ads or website
  • To send you training tips, programme updates, or coaching information, but only if you've opted in
  • To improve our service and understand how the app is used

4. Legal basis for processing

We process your data on the basis of: your consent (for marketing emails and for non-essential cookies), the necessity to perform a contract with you (providing the app and service you've signed up for), and our legitimate interest in responding to enquiries you've made to us directly.

Health and fitness information is "special category" data under Article 9 of the GDPR. We only collect and process it with your explicit consent, which you give when you complete the health questionnaire (PAR-Q), record measurements, or upload progress photos. You can withdraw that consent at any time by deleting the relevant data or your account (see sections 6 and 7).

5. Who we share data with

We use a small number of trusted third-party services to operate Training For Life:

  • Google Firebase / Google Cloud Platform: hosts our app, authentication, database (Firestore) and file storage (progress photos).
  • Brevo: sends transactional emails (such as password resets) and, for users who opt in, marketing emails.
  • Stripe: processes payments and manages subscriptions. Stripe handles your card details directly.
  • Meta Platforms (Facebook / Instagram): runs our lead-form ads, and provides the Facebook Pixel, which only loads if you accept marketing cookies.
  • Vercel: hosts the website and provides privacy-friendly usage analytics, which only load if you accept analytics cookies.
  • Strava: used only if you choose to connect your Strava account, to sync your activity.
  • Anthropic: powers AI-assisted running-plan generation. If you use this feature, the information you enter to generate a plan is sent to Anthropic to produce it.
  • Edamam / USDA: nutrition data lookup services, used only if you use nutrition-related features.

We do not sell your personal data to anyone, under any circumstances.

6. International transfers

Some of these providers are based in the United States. Where your data is transferred outside the European Economic Area, it is protected by appropriate safeguards, such as the European Commission's Standard Contractual Clauses, which the relevant providers have in place.

7. How long we keep your data

We keep account data for as long as your account is active. When you delete your account (see section 8), we erase your login and your personal and training data, including progress photos.

Billing and transaction records are kept for 6 years after your account is deleted, to meet our Irish tax and accounting obligations. Once retained in this way they are no longer linked to your profile, and they are deleted at the end of that period.

If you submit an enquiry via a lead form but never create a full account, and you don't engage with us for 24 months, that information will be deleted or you'll be asked to reconfirm your interest.

8. Your rights

Under GDPR, you have the right to:

  • Access and export your data. Use "Download My Data" in your Profile settings to receive a copy of your data in a machine-readable file, or email us.
  • Correct inaccurate data. You can edit most of your details directly in the app.
  • Delete your data ("right to be forgotten"). Use "Delete Account" in your Profile settings, or email us. This removes your login and personal and training data (subject to the billing retention in section 7).
  • Withdraw marketing consent at any time (every marketing email includes an unsubscribe link).
  • Withdraw cookie consent for analytics and marketing at any time by clearing this site's data in your browser.
  • Lodge a complaint with the Irish Data Protection Commission (dataprotection.ie).

To exercise any right that isn't self-service in the app, email michael@trainingforlife.ie.

9. Cookies

We use essential cookies and local storage that are required for login and core functionality. These are always on.

With your consent, we also use analytics and marketing cookies: Vercel Analytics (to understand how the app is used) and the Facebook Pixel (to measure our ads). These load only after you choose "Accept all" on our cookie banner. If you choose "Reject non-essential", they are not loaded.

10. Children's data

Training For Life is not intended for children. You must be at least 16 years old, the age of digital consent in Ireland, to create an account. If you believe a child has provided us with personal data, please contact us and we will delete it.

11. Changes to this policy

We may update this policy from time to time. The "last updated" date at the top will reflect the most recent changes.
